THE HIGHEST STANDARD OF ADVOCACY
Wildfire Property Damage
Insurance carriers often limit wildfire claim investigations to visual inspections. However, hidden wildfire damage, or thermal damage, to property is just as critical. Modern building materials can withstand heat up to certain temperatures. For instance, wood framing can withstand up to approximately 500°F. This is far less than typical wildfire temperatures, which have been known to reach up to 2,192°F. Damage to framing can occur even when finish carpentry does not appear to be affected.
Wildfire Smoke damage
The insurance carrier’s smoke damage investigation might include testing for lead and asbestos. However, wildfires cause aerosolization of many combustible by-products. This includes Volatile Organic Compounds, heavy metals, and other fine particulates that are dangerous to human life and property. Although testing for these substances is essential, the carriers frequently take the most cost-effective approach, and omit comprehensive evaluations. Once property is cleaned or improperly tested, evidence of these particles can be destroyed, which often leads to a minimized settlement.
